Bio-Science Research Lab Fit-Out
KJWW provided engineering design for a $2.7 million research lab owned by KWS SAAT AG, one of the world’s largest seed companies. The lab is located at the Danforth Plant Science Center’s Bio-Research and Development Growth Park complex in St. Louis.
KWS, a German science and tech company, sells seeds in 70 nations; the St. Louis site is its first location in the U.S. The firm plans to have 75 researchers and support staff on the site within five years. The firm has been developing and distributing varieties for modern agriculture over the last 150 years, with a special focus in the production of sugar beet, corn, and cereals, as well as oil crop seeds. At the center of the lab are 4 growth chambers that are used to support the various research activities in the lab.
KJWW provided MEP and fire protection design along with construction administration services for the lab fit-out, which converted existing space into a bio science research facility. Key systems include variable air volume systems with night setback, a dedicated redundant cooling system for the growth chamber facility, and LED lighting.
The KWS lab represents the final stage of Danforth’s BRDG Park complex, which will be filled to capacity once KWS completes its investment in its new research center.
