KJWW serves as the museum’s primary engineer, providing services for master planning, feasibility studies, life safety/ADA upgrades, system modifications, and several building expansions. Over the past 10 years, KJWW has been involved with vapor barrier upgrades, humidity and building automation controls, lighting upgrades, fire protection upgrades, and electrical power distribution expansion. During this time, the museum has undergone two major expansions, first in 1995 and the second completed in 2002.
The 1995 expansion added 18,500 SF for expanded exhibit and program space. The existing 10,000 SF building was renovated to improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and provide expanded system capacity. The project included design of an off-site artifact storage facility.
The 2002 addition provided another 30,000 SF to house a new IMAX Theater with seating for an audience of 270, a new entrance with lobby, atrium, gift shop and snack bar. The area expanded the exhibit space and provided an outdoor terrace for special events.
