Description :

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis is the headquarters for the 8th District and serves as a training and meeting area for employees of its satellite banks. The extensive renovation of the 6th floor involved demolishing a decades-old kitchen and dining area and replacing them with modern amenitities. Included were a 35-seat mezzanine, conference rooms, private dining areas, and a 140-seat auditorium with projection screening.

Challenges / Solutions |

  • Detailed phasing was necessary to complete the renovation and minimize disruption of lower floors. A two-phased approach allowed the existing kitchen and dining areas to be used during construction.
  • Two 40-foot infill structures were designed to connect the east, central and west wings of the building on the 6th floor, creating a separate area for staff and food to be transferred withouth public viewing. A 3D structural analysis model of the existing concrete structure determined the feasibility of adding the infill areas.
  • The addition of a 2,000 square foot mechanical penthouse required detailed coordination to route utilities through the existing building and structural analysis for added equipment loads to the roof.
  • The addition of steel support framing under the concrete joist system was necessary to support heavy kitchen equipment, including a 3,000-pound stone pizza oven.
