KJWW Engineering served as the mechanical engineer for the new Blue Chip Casino Vessel in Michigan City, Indiana, working with Boca Raton, Florida-based Jamestown Metal Marine Sales as the general contractor, and architect Guido Perla Associates, Seattle, Washington.
The casino gaming space comprises 1,700 slots and a variety of gaming tables on three of the decks. The ship has a maximum capacity of 3,000.
Casino environments, characterized by high occupancy and smoke-filled spaces, require high ventilation rates and large air conditioning loads. The boat contains its own heating, chilling and humidification plant, which consisted of the following:
- 3,600 tons of chilled water capacity utilizing chillers arranged in a variable primary pumping arrangement, using variable-speed 1,200-ton electric-driven centrifugal chillers for energy conservation. Condenser cooling is achieved by once-through cooling from water in the inlet where the casino is docked.
- Two 700-boiler horsepower heating boilers with #2 fuel oil firing (the boat houses oil storage tanks for fuel oil). Heating water is arranged in a primary-secondary pumping arrangement with variable secondary pumps for energy conservation.
- One 300-BHP humidification system with #2 oil-firing with preheat tank and water softener.
- Hydronic pumps for heating and chilled water systems.
- Piping and associated equipment.
The design of these systems on a boat varied from a traditional building design in the requirements to meet maritime codes, rugged construction required for the environment and limited space to fit large equipment on board. Boilers and chillers were installed early, then the ship was built around the equipment. KJWW also provided the mechanical design for 11 air handling units, most variable air volume (VAV) type, exhaust systems throughout the boat and terminal heat transfer equipment.
KJWW provided mechanical engineering designs for ventilation systems, which included supply and exhaust, 100% outside air for smoke removal for the casino areas and supply with re-circulated air for the operations areas. Hydronic designs included chilled water, heating water and steam humidification. KJWW also designed the control sequences for the air handling units, exhaust fans, chillers, boilers and pumps.
