Located in northwest Ohio, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge’s $3.6 million new 12,000 SF visitors center provides educational and interpretive opportunities about the wildlife and refuge. The three-story facility includes hands-on exhibits, a bookstore, 50-seat multipurpose training room, administrative offices, volunteer areas, a conference room and break area, and an observation deck. KJWW Engineering Consultants provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, architectural lighting, and technology (audio/visual, telecommunications, security) design services for the visitor center as part of an IDIQ Contract for A/E services.
The center is served by a vertical-bore, closed-loop, 50-ton geothermal system with water-air heat pumps for the occupied spaces. The system features dedicated energy recovery for the ventilation air. Extensive coordination of the lighting design with the exhibit designs was required.
