KJWW Engineering Consultants performed mechanical and electrical engineering services for an expansion/renovation to the crew house training center and boat storage facility at University of Wisconsin-Madison. The previous facility was only 12,500 SF, equipped to serve 60-70 athletes and lacked adequate office space for coach and staff. The new training center is a total of 52,000 SF with the capacity to serve up to 400 athletes and team personnel.
At the lake level, 2,000 SF were added to the existing rowing tank and office bay. The tank and office bay were converted into a new shell bay. The repair bay was converted to new shell storage and the existing storage space is now a new repair bay.
Men’s locker rooms on the second level were turned into storage space. The new 17,800 SF construction provided conditioning/ergo meter rooms for each team, a double tank for indoor training, restrooms, storage area for trailers and a new main entry to the center.
The new women’s locker room, part of the 13,600 SF, third-floor addition, has a capacity of 200 people and the men’s locker room holds 100. Coaches’ offices and locker rooms, equipment space and a multi-function room for team meetings and social activities are also on the third floor.
All electrical and steam service systems were updated in the expansion. A new chiller system serves the second and third levels. An elevator shaft and stairwell have been added for access to the other levels.
