KJWW Engineering Consultants provided HVAC, plumbing, electrical and technology engineering services for Polk County’s new 10,000 SF community center in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Northwest Community Center offers a dining area to accommodate 125 seniors, an exercise area, lounge, crafts room and a computer room with Internet access. Programs are available through the Center for crisis intervention, foster grandparents, a free clothing bank, and partial assistance for deposits, medications and transportation.
KJWW designed the new HVAC systems and plumbing systems. The Center is equipped with DX cooling and radiant floor heating. Facility lighting included fluorescent fixtures and controls for the interior of the building and metal halide mounted units in the restrooms using occupancy sensors. Variable frequency drives were installed to control the speed of the supply and return fans for the main air system.
The voice and data system was planned with industry-standard-compliant structured cabling systems and telecommunications equipment room layout, including equipment racks and cable management. Other technology designs were cable TV and video distribution, used mostly for the seniors’ lounge.
