Description |
: |
Faced with a 30-year-old facility that could not support vertical or horizontal expansion, or efficiently meet today’s technology requirements, Kishwaukee Community Hospital elected to replace rather than renovate. The new acute care replacement hospital positions the health system to better serve the greater DeKalb County, Ill., region with expanded services and capabilities. The hospital features:
- 100 large, private rooms,
- 4 operating rooms,
- 12 LDRP suites,
- 12 ICU rooms,
- a 200-seat conference center,
- a behavioral health center,
- convenient outpatient services,
- a state-of-the-art emergency department, and
- wireless connection throughout.
- Situated on a 23-acre site, the facility and infrastructure were designed for vertical and horizontal expansion. KJWW designed 20,000-SF of tenant in-fill for the new on-site MOB.
Challenges & Solutions |
- Delivery followed a GMP process with production of multiple bid packages to allow for phased, accelerated construction. Subcontractors were included early in the delivery process to reduce cost risks from commodity and market escalation.
- Performing "Good/Better/Best" systems analyses and on-going value engineering efforts permitted deferred installation of higher quality equipment and additional system redundancies as project buy-out savings allowed.
- Designed a separate electrical service for the medical diagnostic equipment such as MRI, cath labs and X-ray for improved power quality.
- The new central plant includes 1200-tons of chiller capacity with three 400-ton centrifugal chillers and 1400 BHP of boiler capacity with two 700 BHP boilers. The plants includes 2000 kW emergency generation.
