KJWW provided engineering for a new central utility plant to support the 300,000 SF hospital addition also engineered by KJWW. Plans for a new central plant began in 2006, when KJWW completed an infrastructure analysis of the existing 470,000 SF hospital and central plant. This extensive infrastructure analysis included the air handling systems, boilers and steam distribution, cooling systems, temperature controls, medical gas systems, fire protection, power distribution, power generation, fire alarm, nurse call, and telecommunication systems. The results of this analysis laid the groundwork for design of the new Central Utility Plant and upgrades to the existing facility to support the expansion.
The new central plant connects to the existing distribution system via a complex system of below grade utility tunnels, which contain the steam, water, chilled water, medical gas, fire protection, and other piping systems. Once the new plant is on line, the existing plant will be demolished to make way for the facility expansion.
The central plant has a chiller capacity of 4750 tons and steam boiler of 3200 BHP. The plant includes new domestic water distribution from a gravity fed city system. Included is a new booster and fire pump system. The plant features new chilled water pumping and new steam and hot water distribution. The plant is designed for additional boilers and chillers to support future growth.
A new 3000 kW emergency generating system provides back-up power to the campus. A redundant 15 KV distribution system and three new double ended substations serve the new central plant and campus. The existing utility services were replaced and integrated into a new main 15 KV switchgear lineup with closed transition switching between sources.
