Crawford County Memorial Hospital, a critical access hospital in western Iowa, was looking to replace an aging facility. Hospital administration understood that it would be some time before planning and construction of the new campus would be complete. They looked to KJWW Engineering to conduct a facility infrastructure assessment on hospital selected systems that were known to be problematic.
With an aging facility and infrastructure, the hospital concluded that significant renovations would not be practical and have focused on planning for a replacement hospital and medical office building. The new campus will be built to accommodate their growing outpatient clinic needs.
The infrastructure assessment included the following:
- The hot water circulation system was evaluated by reviewing existing drawings, conducting site visits to physically verify existing conditions, and reviewing current system operation with facilities. Options and cost estimates were prepared and recommendations were made. KJWW Engineering worked with the hospital staff and they completed with work in-house.
- The normal power service switchboard was overloaded during the summer months, and the hospital risked complete loss of normal power if the utility transformer failed or the main over current device tripped. KJWW Engineering reviewing existing drawings, conducting site visits to physically verify existing conditions, and reviewing current system loading with facilities staff. Options and cost estimates were prepared and recommendations were made knowing that the hospital would be moving out of this building. We again worked with hospital staff to have the preferred option implemented with a negotiated contractor to reduce overall project costs and resolve the reliability/overloading issue.
- Currently in the process of reviewing hospital sites and evaluating site utilities and infrastructure system options.
